A curious but sad thing happened in Netherlands. A few days ago, a 41-year-old man has ended his life by fatal injection rather than carry on living as an alcoholic, in a radical new extension of Holland’s euthanasia regime. This country has allowed euthanasia 16 years ago and since then, numerous people choose the fatal injection to end their miserable life. Just in 2015, 5.500 people ended their life this way!
This story is about one man, who saw no way out of his problems with alcohol but killing himself. He decided not to kill himself in the traditional way and to commit the suicide, but to choose a euthanasia, as the only possible way of ending his miseries and whole life. His name is Mark Langedijk, a guy who decided that death was the only way to escape from his addiction to drink, according to an account published by his brother.
Mr. Langedijk set the date for his own death and he was joking, drinking beer and eating ham and cheese sandwiches in the hours before his GP arrived at his parents’ home to administer fatal injections, it said.
His brother, who spoke with the DailyMail, said that Mark, their sister Angela and himself, had a great childhood and when they spotted first signs of Mark’s problems, they all tried their best to help him, but it seemed like he didn’t want the help actually. Psychologists, psychiatrists, doctors and other health care professionals did their best to help him, he said, but Mark could not explain to anyone what he felt. Something was tearing him apart from the inside and he just couldn’t fight it anymore, he gave up. Their parents especially have done everything humanly possible to save Mark. They adopted his two children, they took him in when his marriage finally collapsed, they helped him find accommodation, they arranged rehab, they gave him money, support, and unconditional love.
But, the problems were just bigger and bigger. Mark began drinking even more after every rehabilitation, and he eventually decided that nothing more could be done and there is only one way out of his condition. Death. When he announced that he is going to take a fatal injection and use the right on euthanasia to kill himself, all his friends and family were shocked. Euthanasia was for people with cancer, people suffering unbearably, people for whom death was imminent. Euthanasia was certainly not for alcoholics they said, but Mark made up his mind, and nothing could stop him. Before he took this decision, he told his brother, Marcel, that enough is enough and that he really wants to die.
Mark Langedijk’s application for euthanasia, he said, was approved by a doctor from Support and Consultation on Euthanasia in the Netherlands, the medical body set up to provide expertise on euthanasia. The only thing questionable now is, is this euthanasia law in Netherlands crossed the borders of ethics and became terrifying?
This sad story had really, really sad end, as Mark Langedijk had a last cigarette, and the last cup of wine before the lethal injection stopped his heart. He refused the second class of wine, which was offered to him after the first one, with the words: “It’s enough, I’m dying now!”
